These Crock Pot Baked Potatoes are truly a set it and forget it kind of recipe, leaving precious space in your oven to bake other recipes you’re making.
Serve these crock pot baked potatoes next to a sous vide steak, pork roast or vegetarian black bean burger.
The Easiest Crock Pot Baked Potatoes
The slow cooker is such a great place to cook baked potatoes especially if you have your oven filled with other delicious recipes you’re whipping up at the same time. We love crock pot potatoes because:
- Minimal ingredients: All you need is russet potatoes, olive oil, salt, and pepper for the most tender potatoes in all the land.
- Hands off: Once you’ve got your potatoes in the slow cooker, it’s 100% hands-off until they are done. Heck yes!
- Perfect every time: You really can’t mess these crock pot baked potatoes up. If you like them a little more firm, take them out earlier and if you like your potatoes on the softer side, let them keep cooking.
What Types of Potatoes Can I Use?
This particular crock pot baked potatoes recipe calls for large russet potatoes. You can also use Idaho because they are very similar.
Technically you can use any kind of potato when baking potatoes in crock pot. But, do note that size matters when it comes to the baking time. The bigger the potato, the longer you’ll have to cook it.
Here are some other potato options you can try:
- Sweet potatoes
- Yams
- Yukon gold potatoes
- Red potatoes
- Fingerling potatoes
How to Make Crock Pot Baked Potatoes
Follow these simple steps to perfect baked potatoes in crock pot every time:
Step 1: Prep Potatoes
- Prep the potatoes by running them under warm water. Using your fingers or a veggie brush, remove any dirt or residue.
- Then, pat dry with a kitchen towel or paper towel.
- Use a fork to pierce potatoes on all sides around 8-10 times per potato.
- Next, rub each potato with olive oil, and generously season the outside of each potato with salt and pepper.
Do I have to poke holes in my baked potatoes? We recommend poking holes in your potatoes before baking to make sure they don’t explode. It only takes a few seconds!
Do I need to use aluminum foil? No aluminum foil is necessary for this recipe. Once you close your slow cooker, your potatoes will steam and there is no need for aluminum foil.
Step 2: Place in Crock Pot
Place potatoes on the bottom of your crock pot, and then place the lid on top. Seriously, that’s it.
You’ll see that we cooked 4 large russet potatoes at one time because that is what fit on the bottom of our slow cooker. The amount of potatoes you can cook at once depends on how big your taters are and how big your slow cooker is!
Step 3: Cook on High
Turn your crock pot to high, and let your potatoes cook on high for anywhere from 4-6 hours depending on how big they are and how firm you like your taters.
Cook time will vary depending on the size of your potatoes.
rule of thumb
You know your potatoes are done cooking when they are easily pierced with a fork, but still firm on the outside. If the flesh is still hard on the inside, cook those taters a little longer.
Step 4: Enjoy!
Let crock pot potatoes cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and topping with your favorite tater toppings. Check out our recommendations below.
Serve as a side dish or as a loaded baked potato for your main dish.
Toppings for Baked Potatoes
