What is Dalgona Coffee?
Dalgona coffee is a delicious coffee drink (or coffee whip) that is made of equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and water. You guys, it is SO delicious! It is a fancy coffee drink made super easy.
Dalgona coffee at a glance….
- The consistency of dalgona coffee is more of a foam whip.
- You generally serve dalgona coffee over a base liquid.
- When you use equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and water it tends to be more bitter than sweet.
Is it hot or cold?
That actual dalgona coffee itself after it is whisked together into a delicious foam is served cold. However, you can serve your dalgona coffee over or cold liquid. For example, you can serve it on top of iced milk or hot milk. YOU get to decide!
How Do You Make Dalgona Coffee?
Dalgona coffee is made of three ingredients and is very easy to make.
All you do to make dalgona coffee is place instant coffee, sugar, and water into a large mixing bowl and beat it with an electric mixer for 5 minutes until the mixture turns into a creamy and foamy whip. Then serve it over a base liquid of your choice.
It’s pretty simple!
Though there are only three ingredients in dalgona coffee, you have options when it comes to those ingredients. Let’s break them down.
Instant Coffee
The Instant Coffee in dalgona coffee is what will determine how strong, bitter, cafinatied, and flavorful your dalgona coffee is. You can use a basic instant coffee or you can use an espresso for a stronger dalgona coffee.
Guess what? You can also use mushroom coffee or decafe instant coffee if you want the coffee flavor, but none of the caffine! Check out our favorite instant coffee options below.
Sugar
You have to use a granulated sugar when making dalgona coffee, but you have choices when it comes to that, too! We generally use brown sugar, but feel free to use any of the sugars below, too.
- Brown sugar
- White sugar
- Coconut sugar
- Sugar in the Raw
Water
Water is the liquid you use to bind everything together for dalgona coffee! Keep it easy and use water!
Add-Ins
You can add so many things to your dalgona coffee to change up the flavor! We made our dalgona coffee a delicious seasonal pumpkin spice dalgona coffee using pumpkin spice and pumpkin puree! Here are some other great add in options!
- Chai Spices
- Cocoa powder
- Peanut flour
- Matcha powder
- Freeze dried strawberries crushed up
Base Liquid
Think of your dalgona coffee as a “latte” you are going to use it as the whip topping to a coffee drink.
We like to sweeten the base liquid to balance out the bitterness of the dalgona coffee with some sweetness. We used almond milk and maple syrup as our base layer, but feel free to use whatever milk and sweetener you would like!
Sweeten things up
If you like things a bit more sweet rather than savory, feel free to add in more sugar! A tablespoon more will not throw off the whip consistency!
Hand Whisk or Electric Whisk?
We highly recommend using a hand mixer for dalgona coffee since you have to whisk the dalgona coffee for an extended period of time.
However, you can use a hand whisk, too. You will just have to hand whisk the dalgona coffee for 8-10 minutes, which may give you a serious hand cramp.
Pumpkin Spice Dalgona Latte
Tis the season for everything PUMPKIN! Move over pumpkin spice lattes and hello pumpkin spice dalgona!
Dalgona coffee whip requires a little work for a perfect thick and creamy whip that goes perfectly with any liquid base! We use pumpkin puree and pumpkin spice to create the most delicious and seasonal pumpkin dalgona! YES YES YES!
For the liquid base, we love mixing almond milk with a little bit of maple syrup! Why? Because sweetening the almond milk and then mixing the dalgona coffee with the milk helps to balance the bitterness out of the dalgona coffee!
Feel free to add anything to your base liquid! Cinnamon or honey would also be SO delicious!
