Need a delicious side for dinner tonight? These smashed red potatoes are flavorful, crispy, and perfect for every potato lover!
Smashed Potatoes are IN
We are all about potatoes here on FFF! From crock pot baked potatoes to red potatoes in foil, we love them all! Potatoes are our favorite because they are affordable, they have a long shelf life, and they can be transformed into delicious dishes!
Our new favorite potato recipes is this smashed potato recipe. OMG. These potatoes are creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and perfectly seasoning with everything bagel seasoning. You just can’t get enough.
How to Make Smashed Potatoes
There are a few tips and tricks to make the perfect smashed potato. We are going to walk you though every step of making these delicious spuds along with some of our favorite tips and tricks.
Step 1: Choose Your Taters
You can make these smashed potatoes with ANY type of potato. We like to use red potatoes because they (generally) come a bit smaller than other potatoes and that is key. Small potatoes work best to make smashed potatoes.Â
When deciding on which potatoes to use, try your best to choose potatoes that are all about the same size! From there, if you end up with smaller potatoes, you just have to cut the potatoes in half.
If you end up with larger potatoes, you may have to cut the potatoes into thirds.
Step 2: Boil
After the potatoes are cut and ready to go, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Why salted? Salting the water gives the potatoes flavor while they cook. Trust us, you can tell the difference between a potato in salted water and non-salted water.
When the water comes to a rolling boil (carefully) add the potatoes to the boiling water and boil them for 20-25 minutes.
How can you tell when the potatoes are ready? To test the potatoes all you have to do is carefully poke a potato with a fork and if the fork goes easily into the potato they are ready!
What you do NOT want is the potato to fall a part when you poke them with the fork! That means they are overcooked!
The key to smashed potatoes is to try not to overcook the potatoes! If you do over cook the taters, they may turn into mashed potatoes rather than smashed potatoes!
Step 3: Smash
Once the potatoes are softened. Strain the water from the potatoes and pat them dry!
From there, place them on an oiled baking sheet and get ready to SMASH.
How do you smash potatoes? Instead of smashing the potatoes with a fork use the bottom of a cup or a measuring cup. A larger, flat, and hard surface helps to smash the potato rather than mash them.
Here’s a tip–> If you are smashing potato halves, smash the potatoes with the inside (skinless) part of the potato pointed up!
Step 4: Season + Eat
The last step to making a smashed potato is seasoning them! Drizzle each potato with olive oil and everything bagel seasoning.
If you are grilling the potatoes, you are looking at a 15 minute grill time. If you are broiling the potatoes you are looking at a 2-3 minute broil time.
No matter how you decide to cook the potatoes, sprinkling the potatoes with cheese with a minute of cook time left will complete the smashed red potato recipe! Remove them from the oven or grill and enjoy!

Smashed Grilled Potatoes Recipe
Need a delicious side for dinner tonight? These smashed red potatoes are flavorful, crispy, and perfect for every potato lover!
- Prep Time: 30 minutes
- Cook Time: 15 minutes
- Total Time: 45 minutes
Author: Linley Richter
Yield: 16 smashed potatoes 1x
Category: Side Dish
Method: Grill
Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 8 small red potatoes, halved
- 1 tablespoon  everything bagel seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (if you use store-bought everything bagel seasoning skip the salt)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
- First, preheat the grill to 400ºF or turn the oven to broil and prepare a baking sheet by lining a baking sheet with tin foil and spraying the tin foil with cooking spray. Set aside.
- Next, bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat and add salt.
- When the water comes to a rolling boil, add the potato halves.
- Turn the heat to medium/high and boil potatoes for 20-25 minutes or until fork tender.
- While the potatoes are boiling, whisk together olive oil and spices. Set aside.
- Remove from the water and place potatoes onto a tea towel. Carefully remove excess water from the potatoes with the tea towel.
- Place each potato half on the tin foil skin-side down and gently smash each potato with the bottom of a glass or a 1 cup measuring cup (you just want a flat, hard surface). Be careful not to smash them too hard or they will turn into mashed potatoes.
- Drizzle each of the potatoes with olive oil and spices.
- For the grill. Carefully flip the potatoes skin-side up on the tin foil and transfer the tin foil from the baking sheet to the grill. Grill for 10-15 minutes and then flip the potatoes over with a spatula. Sprinkle potatoes with parmesan and let them cook for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
- For the oven. Place potatoes in the oven skin side down and broil them on high for 3-5 minutes (depending on your broiler) or until potatoes turn golden brown and then sprinkle with parmesan and broil them for an additional 1-2 minutes or until cheese is melted.
